Legacies
Naturally, your first priority will be to safeguard the interests of your loved ones. But as the years go by, many of us find that there is room to leave a gift to charity. Once you have considered your family and friends please consider leaving a life-changing gift to Village Water. Any gift however small can make a real difference to the lives of people in Zambia.
Remembering Village Water in your will is simple.
There are a few different kinds of gift you can leave in your will. The most common are described below.
Residuary bequest
A gift of the remainder of the estate after all other bequests have been made and debts cleared is called a residuary bequest. You may wish to leave either all or part of your residuary to Village Water.
Pecuniary bequest
A gift of a fixed sum of money in your will is called a pecuniary bequest. The value of pecuniary legacies will decrease over time, as the cost of living increases. You may wish to consult a solicitor about protecting the value of this gift by linking it to the Retail Price Index.
Specific bequest
A particular named item left as a gift in your will is known as a specific bequest - for example, property, shares, paintings or piece of jewellery. Village Water can sell such items to raise valuable funds.
As an added benefit to both Village Water and your loved ones, not only is a charitable gift in your will tax-free but any bequest to a charity is deducted from the value of the estate before inheritance tax liability is calculated, lowering the amount.
For more help and advice on including a charitable legacy in your will, and calculating how much your estate is worth, you can speak with your solicitor, or visit the Remember A Charity website.
Finally, if you have decided to leave a gift to Village Water in your will, please let us know. We would love the opportunity to thank you and keep you informed about our work. Thank you for your gift. It is most appreciated.
